Considering selling your home this fall? It’s a good idea to get it into tip-top shape prior to listing it— and even if you’re not planning to move. Home maintenance as we head into autumn is important. Here’s what you can do as summer winds down.

Look for air leaks

Energy efficiency should be top of mind more than ever, and you’ll want to make sure your home is well insulated before colder weather arrives. Check the caulking around windows, doors, and vents, or use weather stripping.

Get the yard into shape

Curb appeal is important when listing a home, it’s what sets the first impression for buyers. Make sure the lawn and gardens are well manicured, tidy up or repair walkways, and you can even re-stain porches and decks that may have been worn down during the summer months.

Declutter the garage and shed

You may have collected a lot of clutter in your garage or shed over the summer months—sports equipment, kids toys, and gardening tools can all be tidied and put away to make room for fall and winter items.

Clean the gutters and downspouts

Clogged gutters can become a big nuisance and create larger problems if not maintained. Either clean them yourself, or hire someone to ensure debris is cleared before there’s an issue, or before falling leaves cause even more blockage. Need a good eaves trough contact? Check the furnace

To avoid any surprises during a home inspection, make sure the furnace is in working order well before the cold weather sets in. Other than just turning it on, you should also clean or replace the filter and vacuum the area around the furnace. You can also get an HVAC professional to come out for servicing.

Do a safety check

Home safety is important—especially before you start spending more time indoors. Check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working, clean out the dryer vent, ensure you have fire extinguishers at the ready, and inspect and clean the fireplace if you have one.
