If you’re already thinking ahead to spring and gardening, it can be tricky to know when to get started to maximize your garden’s potential.

When should I start preparing my garden?

You’ll want to wait until after the last frost to plant anything outdoors – typically, May is ideal for planting to avoid any unexpected frost in Toronto. But, you can always get a headstart on planting season by pre-purchasing plants, seeds, soil, and tools, and planning your garden’s layout. You can even start by sowing some seeds indoors, in March, so that your seedlings are ready to be replanted outside when the weather is warmer.

If you’re looking to plant spring flowers this year, below are six varieties to consider choosing for your garden. Thinking about planting a vegetable garden instead? Check out this great guide for the best time to start seeds indoors, when to transplant young plants outside, and when to direct the seeds into the ground.

What flowers can I plant in the spring?

Pansies

Pansies can thrive in chilly, early spring temperatures and can be planted in the ground when temperatures reach above 8ºC. Pansies work well in pots or planters as well and thrive in full sun or partial shade.

Marigolds

Looking to attract pollinators? Bright and sunny marigolds are a favourite flower of bees and butterflies, and can be planted in early spring, after the last frost.

Petunias

If you want to add colour and variety to your garden, petunias come in a range of shades and sizes. They don’t do well with frost, so keep an eye on the forecast before planting, and make sure they get plenty of sun.

Forsythia

Did you know Forsythia’s golden spring flowers actually come from the olive family? This shrub does well in direct sunlight, and wants a lot of space to grow.

Hydrangeas

Beautiful, lush hydrangeas should be planted in the spring, well before it gets hot as the cool temperatures ensure the soil stays moist. As ‘hydra’ references the Greek word for ‘water’, remember that these flowers are thirsty and require plenty of water.

Geraniums

Check whether your geraniums are annuals or perennials—that will determine how much sun they should get, as annuals require full sun and perennials can stand some shade. These flowers work well in planter beds, but make sure to wait until well after the last frost to plant them.
